LUNG has planned for long to go back to the modern world. He knows that he is going to leave one day and that he should not have given CHANG any false hope. YIK has misunderstood LUNG, however. CHANG learns from books that sulphuric acid is a particular chemical substance and decides to go uphill to look for some. HIN does not know why she has to do this. LUNG gets deeply touched by CHANG’s thoughtfulness but feels so sorry about all the trouble he has caused. JING is considering assigning a more important post to SZE and is afraid that LUI will show strong opposition to this. LUNG says they can ask for LAO’s support. JING suggests to LAO that KATE should participate in the administration of state affairs.
